Populus alba ‘Italica’ also known as Lombardy Poplar was first introduced in Italy in the 1700s and was known for its hardiness in being able to survive well, even with costal winds. It arrived to the UK in 1758 and was given the Award of Garden Merit in 2002.
Lombardy Poplar can be seen displaying beautiful bright green foliage during the spring which will last until early autumn when it then turns a beautiful yellow colour, providing bright display of colour during these darker months. Even once all of the leaves inevitability fall of the tree, the Italica still looks grand with its tall height and its very uniformed look. The Lombardy Poplar is commonly used to line large stretches of road or to be uses as a windbreak. Perfect for any large garden park.
Populus nigra ‘Italica’ is able to withstand most soils but grows best in moist soils. Can withstand flooding as well as pollution. Fit for costal and urban areas.
