Prunus 'Stella', commonly known as the Stella cherry tree, is a highly popular variety celebrated for its abundant and delicious fruit production. This deciduous tree is known for its vibrant display of white blossoms in the spring, which precede the development of its sweet, dark red to black cherries. The Stella cherry tree is self-fertile, meaning it does not require a second tree for pollination, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens.
At maturity, Prunus 'Stella' typically reaches a height of about 4-5 meters and has a spread of approximately 3-4 meters. The tree has a rounded, spreading habit, which can be pruned to maintain its shape and size. The leaves are a glossy green, turning to shades of yellow and orange in the fall, adding seasonal interest to the landscape.
Stella cherry trees thrive best in well-drained, fertile soil with a preference for a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). They require full sun to produce the best fruit yield and develop the sweetest flavour. While they can tolerate some shade, too much can reduce fruit production and affect overall tree vigour. Additionally, the Stella cherry tree is relatively hardy and can withstand colder climates, although it prefers a sheltered location to avoid late spring frosts that can damage blossoms. Proper care, including regular watering, mulching, and annual pruning, will ensure the health and productivity of the tree, making it a delightful and fruitful addition to any garden.
