Prunus avium 'Plena', commonly known as the Flowering Cherry, is a deciduous tree that is celebrated for its stunning spring display of double white blossoms. These flowers appear in clusters, creating a breathtaking spectacle of frothy white blooms that can illuminate a garden. As the flowers mature, they often take on a subtle pink hue, adding to their charm. The tree's leaves emerge a bronze colour in the spring, turning green in the summer, and finally transforming to vibrant shades of orange and red in the autumn, providing year-round interest.
The Flowering Cherry typically reaches a mature height of approximately 10-15 meters and has a spread of about 8-10 meters, making it a medium-sized tree suitable for larger gardens and parklands. Its growth habit is broadly conical to rounded, and it has a graceful branching structure that adds an architectural element to the landscape. This tree is particularly noted for its attractive, smooth, reddish-brown bark, which can be especially eye-catching in the winter months when the tree is bare.
Prunus avium 'Plena' thrives best in well-drained, fertile soils and prefers full sun to partial shade. It is relatively adaptable, but it performs optimally in soil that is slightly acidic to neutral. While it can tolerate a range of soil types, it does not fare well in waterlogged conditions. The tree is also valued for its resistance to common diseases that affect other cherry varieties, making it a robust choice for ornamental planting. Due to its ornamental beauty and resilience, the Flowering Cherry is a popular choice for adding seasonal interest and elegance to both private and public landscapes.
