The Prunus cerasifera 'Crimson Pointe,' commonly known as the Upright Cherry Plum, is an ornamental tree celebrated for its striking vertical growth habit and vibrant foliage. This variety is particularly noted for its slender, columnar form, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens or urban landscapes where space is limited. The tree extends to a mature height of approximately 5 to 7 meters and maintains a narrow spread of about 1 to 2 meters, which emphasizes its upright stature.
Key features of the Upright Cherry Plum include its deep purple, almost black foliage that brings a dramatic touch to any garden. In spring, the tree is adorned with a profusion of delicate, pale pink blossoms that attract pollinators such as bees. Following the bloom, the tree may produce small, edible cherry-like plums that add an extra layer of interest. The foliage colour remains vibrant throughout the growing season, providing a striking contrast to the more common green foliage of other plants.
Prunus cerasifera 'Crimson Pointe' thrives in well-drained soils and adapts to a range of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and clay soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade, ensuring it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day for optimal growth and foliage coloration. This tree is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal pruning to maintain its shape and size, making it a favourite among gardeners looking for an easy-to-care-for yet visually impactful addition to their landscapes. Its tidy, upright form also makes it an ideal candidate for planting in rows to create a living screen or as a standout specimen in a mixed border.
