The Prunus domestica 'Reine Claude d'Oullins', commonly known as the greengage plum, is a variety of European plum celebrated for its delectable, golden-yellow fruits. This plum is highly valued both for fresh consumption and in culinary applications, often featuring in jams and desserts due to its sweet and juicy flavour. Typically grows to a height of 4 to 6 meters and spreads approximately 3 to 5 meters, making it an ideal choice for home gardens and orchards where space might be limited.
Notable for producing medium to large plums with a smooth texture and a juicy, sweet taste, the fruit of the greengage generally ripens in late summer. In spring, the tree is adorned with beautiful white blossoms that not only enhance its visual appeal but also provide benefits to pollinators such as bees. Its leaves are deciduous, offering lush green foliage throughout the growing season that transitions to a soft yellow in the fall.
The greengage prefers well-drained, fertile soils but is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and clay soils. It thrives best in slightly acidic to neutral pH soil and requires full sun, needing at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily to ensure optimal fruit production. As a self-fertile variety, the greengage does not necessitate a pollination partner to bear fruit, though planting it alongside other plum varieties can enhance yield. This tree is also an excellent choice for those interested in sustainable gardening, as it attracts pollinators and offers fruit for wildlife. Regular pruning helps maintain its shape and encourages vigorous fruiting.
