Prunus domestica 'Victoria', commonly known as the Victoria plum, is a deciduous fruit tree renowned for its delicious and versatile plums. This cultivar is particularly popular in-home gardens and orchards due to its reliable fruit production and relatively easy maintenance. The tree typically reaches a mature height of around 4 to 5 meters with a similar spread, making it suitable for smaller garden spaces as well as larger plots.
The Victoria plum tree is characterized by its attractive, oval-shaped leaves that provide a lush green canopy during the growing season. In spring, the tree produces an abundance of small, white flowers that are not only beautiful but also vital for attracting pollinators such as bees. These blossoms give way to the tree’s signature fruit: medium to large-sized plums that boast a red and yellow skin and a sweet, juicy flesh. The fruit is excellent for eating fresh, cooking, or making preserves and jams.
For optimal growth, the Victoria plum tree prefers well-drained, fertile soil and thrives best in full sun, although it can tolerate partial shade. It is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, as long as there is good drainage. Regular watering, particularly during dry spells, and annual pruning help maintain the tree’s health and productivity. This cultivar is also relatively hardy and can withstand colder climates, making it a versatile choice for many gardeners.
