The Prunus padus 'Canada Red', commonly known as the Bird Cherry, is a striking ornamental tree that adds a splash of colour and interest to any landscape. This deciduous tree is well-known for its dramatic transformation throughout the seasons. In spring, it produces an abundance of fragrant white flowers that attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies. As the season progresses, the foliage of the 'Canada Red' turns from green to a deep, rich burgundy-red, providing a stunning contrast against the summer greenery. By autumn, the leaves shift to shades of yellow and red before falling, creating a vibrant display.
Mature Bird Cherry trees typically reach a height of approximately 7-9 meters, with a spread of about 4.5-6 meters, making them a medium-sized tree suitable for gardens and urban settings. They have a relatively fast growth rate and develop a rounded, spreading canopy that provides ample shade. The bark is another notable feature, as it is smooth and dark, often with noticeable horizontal lenticels that add to the tree's visual appeal.
Prunus padus 'Canada Red' thrives in a variety of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, as long as they are well-drained. It prefers full sun to partial shade, making it adaptable to different garden environments. Additionally, this tree is relatively low-maintenance and tolerant of urban pollution, making it an excellent choice for city landscapes. The Bird Cherry is also known for producing small, black fruits that are attractive to birds, adding to the ecological value of this beautiful tree.
