Prunus sargentii 'Charles Sargent', commonly known as Sargent Cherry, is an ornamental tree renowned for its striking features and vibrant seasonal displays. This deciduous tree is celebrated for its rounded crown and graceful branching. In spring, it produces an abundance of single, pale pink blossoms that attract pollinators, creating a captivating visual spectacle. The blooms are followed by glossy, dark green leaves, which transform into a brilliant array of orange, red, and yellow hues in the autumn, offering a stunning seasonal show.
Reaching a mature height of approximately 12 to 15 meters, with a similar spread, Prunus sargentii 'Charles Sargent' is well-suited for medium to large gardens and parks. Its upright and vase-like form makes it ideal as a standalone specimen or as part of an ornamental group planting. The tree's bark adds year-round interest, with a smooth texture and a rich, reddish-brown colour that becomes more pronounced as it matures.
Prunus sargentii 'Charles Sargent' thrives best in well-drained, fertile soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, from sand to clay. It prefers full sun to partial shade, ensuring optimal growth and flowering. This tree exhibits good resistance to common pests and diseases, making it a relatively low-maintenance choice for gardeners. Its adaptability and striking seasonal changes make it a favourite among landscape designers and garden enthusiasts alike.
