The Prunus x subhirtella 'Autumnalis', commonly known as the Winter Flowering Cherry, is a deciduous tree renowned for its enchanting display of delicate blooms during the colder months. This ornamental cherry tree is prized for its ability to produce soft pink or white flowers from late autumn through to early spring, providing a splash of colour when most other plants are dormant. Its blossoms are semi-double and appear in clusters, creating a picturesque scene that can brighten up any landscape.
At maturity, the Winter Flowering Cherry typically reaches a height of 6 to 8 meters and spreads to about 4 to 6 meters, forming a graceful, arching canopy. The tree's foliage emerges as a fresh green in spring, turns a vibrant yellow or orange in autumn, and eventually falls to reveal the beautiful structure of its branches. This tree is relatively fast-growing and can quickly become a focal point in a garden or park setting.
Prunus x subhirtella 'Autumnalis' prefers well-drained soils and can thrive in a range of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and clay soils, as long as they are not waterlogged. It performs best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. This tree is also relatively low maintenance and can withstand urban pollution, making it a versatile choice for a variety of planting locations. The Winter Flowering Cherry's combination of seasonal beauty, manageable size, and adaptability makes it a favourite among gardeners and landscapers alike.
