The Sawtooth Oak, scientifically known as Quercus acutissima, is a deciduous tree native to East Asia, particularly China, Korea, and Japan. This species is characterized by its distinctive, sharply serrated leaves, which give the tree its common name. The leaves are elongated and lance-shaped, with prominent, bristle-tipped teeth along the margins, creating a saw-like appearance. The foliage turns a beautiful golden yellow in the fall, adding seasonal interest to landscapes.
At maturity, the Sawtooth Oak typically reaches a height of 15 to 20 meters and can have a spread of 12 to 18 meters. This tree develops a broad, rounded crown with age, providing ample shade and making it a popular choice for parks and large gardens. The bark is dark grey and becomes deeply furrowed with age, adding texture to the tree's overall appearance.
The Sawtooth Oak is highly adaptable to various soil types, thriving in well-drained, acidic to slightly alkaline soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade, making it versatile for different planting sites. One of its notable features is its ability to produce an abundance of acorns, which serve as a valuable food source for wildlife. Additionally, the Sawtooth Oak is relatively fast-growing compared to other oaks and is resistant to many common pests and diseases, making it a robust and low-maintenance choice for landscape use.
