Quercus bicolor, also known as Swamp White Oak is a tree commonly found growing in damper places such as riverbanks or near bogs. This variant of the White Oak is very similar in foliage with its shape of leaves.
Younger specimens of White Oak have a slightly hairy bark which will then become fully bare and smooth. As the tree ages, this park will turn grey-brown and will start to flake off in long flates of wood. During Spring, White Oak will start to display a glossy green foliage which come later in the year will start to change colour which will depend on how warm and sunny the autumn is but will mostly turn red-orange colours. Autumn also brings small acorns on White Oak.
White Oak is a hardy tree, able to survive harsh winters in the UK and will be able to resist some winds but better not to plant near a coast. Will thrive in most damp soils but needs a deep bedding to grow its roots.
