Quercus coccinea, commonly known as the Scarlet Oak, is a striking and resilient deciduous tree renowned for its vibrant autumn foliage. This majestic tree typically reaches a mature height of 18 to 24 meters and spreads approximately 12 to 18 meters, creating a broad, rounded canopy that provides ample shade. The Scarlet Oak's leaves are deeply lobed with bristle-tipped teeth, turning brilliant shades of scarlet and crimson in the fall, which is one of its most captivating features.
The Scarlet Oak is well-suited to a variety of soil types, although it thrives best in well-drained, acidic soils. It can tolerate sandy and loamy soils but does not perform well in heavy clay or waterlogged conditions. This tree prefers full sun to partial shade, requiring at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to develop its best shape and coloration. Its adaptability to different soil conditions and sunlight preferences makes it a versatile choice for both urban and rural landscapes.
Notable features of the Scarlet Oak include its acorns, which are an important food source for wildlife such as squirrels, deer, and various bird species. The tree's bark is dark and furrowed, adding an interesting texture to the landscape. Additionally, the Scarlet Oak is relatively resistant to pests and diseases, making it a hardy option for ornamental planting. Its impressive size, stunning fall colours, and ecological benefits make Quercus coccinea a valuable addition to any garden or park setting.
