A Native of the Mediterranean, the Holm Oak has been grown in Britain since the 1500s. It got the name from the old English word “Holm” which means Holly, a very fitting description for its foliage. The Holm Oak has won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002 and its very tough and long lasting timber is used largely for charcoal, vine-props and even joinery.
This evergreen tree is a very large specimen with long, drooping branches. It is seen with dark green leaves with silver coloured undersides. Quercus ilex is largely used for hedging within gardens but also a great choice for a coastal plant with it being remarkably wind and salt tolerant. Small acorns can also be seen growing on the Holm Oak.
This magnificent specimen it suitable for all gardens with it being well suited for trimming allowing it to be grown at many sizes. It can tolerate air pollution very well and will thrive well on well drained soils.
