One of the lesser known oaks, this tree comes from North America and is one that grows on the lower Mississippi river. This oak is one that resembles the more popular Shummard oak but is seen with a richer autumn tone, a better structure and a tougher and more versatile character.
This magnificent tree will grow to a height of around 20m in size with larger sizes up to around 30m also being found. The leaves are sharply lobed and have a magnificent reddish-purple colour during the early spring which will soon become a dark green colour with the summer coming. Come autumn with the cooler temperature the foliage will become a bright red colour, often later compared to other trees, giving it a longer interest into the winter months than other trees. Small acorns can also be found during the tree which attract all types of wildlife who will consume or hide the acorns as soon as they are grown. Nuttall Oak’s bark is dark and divided into plate-like shapes.
Will grow well on any type of soil and is able to tolerate urban areas. Able to withstand colder temperatures, a perfect tree especially for parklands.
