Quercus palustris 'Green Pillar', commonly known as Upright Pin Oak, is a striking deciduous tree renowned for its narrow, columnar growth habit. This cultivar is particularly favoured in urban landscapes and small gardens due to its unique vertical structure, making it an excellent choice for tight spaces. At maturity, the 'Green Pillar' typically reaches a height of approximately 12 to 15 meters and has a spread of about 3 to 4 meters, maintaining its slender profile.
Key features of the Upright Pin Oak include its glossy, dark green leaves that turn brilliant shades of red and bronze in the fall, providing vibrant seasonal interest. The tree's bark is initially smooth and grey, becoming ridged and darker as it ages. One of the most notable characteristics of this oak is its ability to thrive in a variety of soil conditions, including poorly drained and acidic soils. However, it prefers moist, well-drained soils for optimal growth.
Quercus palustris 'Green Pillar' is also adaptable to different light conditions, although it flourishes best in full sun. It is relatively low-maintenance once established, with a moderate growth rate and good resistance to pests and diseases. Its upright form not only adds architectural interest to the landscape but also can serve as an effective windbreak or privacy screen. With these attributes, the Upright Pin Oak is an excellent addition to any garden or urban setting, offering both aesthetic appeal and functional benefits.
