The Quercus petraea, commonly known as the Sessile Oak, is a majestic deciduous tree renowned for its robustness and longevity. This species can reach a mature height of 20 to 40 meters, with a spread of around 20 to 30 meters, making it a prominent presence in the landscape. Unlike other oaks, the Sessile Oak's acorns are directly attached to the twigs without stalks, hence the name "sessile."
Key features of the Sessile Oak include its deeply lobed, dark green leaves which turn a rich golden-brown in autumn, adding seasonal interest. The bark is grey and smooth in young trees, becoming rugged and fissured as the tree ages. The Sessile Oak flowers in spring, producing small, inconspicuous yellowish-green catkins, which later develop into the distinctive acorns.
Sessile Oaks thrive best in well-drained, acidic to neutral soils, although they can tolerate a range of soil types including clay, loam, and sandy soils. These trees prefer full sun to partial shade, making them versatile for various planting locations. Notably, the Sessile Oak is a key species in supporting wildlife; its leaves, acorns, and bark provide food and habitat for numerous insects, birds, and mammals. This makes the Sessile Oak not only an impressive tree for aesthetic and practical landscaping but also a vital contributor to biodiversity.
