Quercus robur, commonly known as the English Oak, is a majestic deciduous tree renowned for its stately presence and longevity. With a mature height ranging from 20 to 40 meters and a spread of 12 to 20 meters, this tree often becomes a central feature in the landscapes it adorns. The English Oak is identified by its robust, deeply grooved bark and lobed leaves that turn from vibrant green to rich golden hues in the autumn.
Its acorns, a key food source for wildlife, grow on long stalks and add to the tree's distinctive appearance.
One of the key features of Quercus robur is its adaptability to a wide range of soil types. It thrives in well-drained, fertile soils but is also tolerant of heavier clay soils and can withstand occasional waterlogging. This flexibility makes it a versatile choice for various planting sites. The English Oak prefers full sun to partial shade, allowing it to develop a strong, broad canopy that provides ample shade and habitat for numerous species of birds and insects.
Noteworthy for its ecological importance, the English Oak supports a rich biodiversity. Its leaves, branches, and bark host a myriad of insects, which in turn attract birds and mammals, enhancing the ecosystem. Additionally, the wood of Quercus robur is highly valued for its strength and durability, making it a popular choice for furniture, flooring, and traditional timber framing. The tree's historical and cultural significance, coupled with its impressive physical characteristics, make the English Oak a cherished symbol of strength and endurance in many landscapes.
