Quercus x hispanica 'Wageningen', commonly known as the Spanish Oak, is a striking deciduous tree that combines the best attributes of its parent species, Quercus robur (English Oak) and Quercus cerris (Turkish Oak). This hybrid tree is renowned for its robust growth, attractive foliage, and adaptability to various environmental conditions. The Spanish Oak typically reaches a mature height of 15 to 20 meters, with a spread of approximately 10 to 15 meters, making it a substantial and majestic addition to any landscape.
One of the key features of the Spanish Oak is its beautiful, lobed leaves, which are dark green and glossy during the growing season, turning to shades of yellow and brown in the autumn before they fall. The tree's bark is also noteworthy, starting off smooth and grey on young trees and becoming rougher and more ridged as the tree matures. In spring, the Spanish Oak produces small, inconspicuous flowers, which give way to acorns that are a valuable food source for wildlife.
The Spanish Oak is highly adaptable to different soil types, thriving in well-drained loamy, sandy, or clay soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade, ensuring robust growth and development. This tree is relatively low-maintenance, resistant to pollution, and tolerant of both dry and wet conditions, making it an excellent choice for urban environments, parks, and large gardens. The Spanish Oak's combination of aesthetic appeal, environmental benefits, and resilience makes it a standout specimen for a variety of landscapes.
