The Salix babylonica 'Tortuosa', commonly known as the Dragon's Claw Willow or Curly Willow, is a unique and striking ornamental tree that captivates with its intriguing form and twisting branches. This deciduous tree is notable for its distinctive, contorted branches that appear almost sculptural, creating an eye-catching silhouette in any landscape. The leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, and tend to have a slight curl, adding to the tree's whimsical appearance. During the summer, the foliage is a vibrant green, transitioning to a golden-yellow in the autumn before shedding for the winter.
In terms of size, the Dragon's Claw Willow typically reaches a mature height of around 6 to 10 meters with a spread of about 4 to 7 meters. It is a moderately fast-growing tree, which makes it an excellent choice for those looking to quickly establish a focal point within a garden or park setting.
Salix babylonica 'Tortuosa' thrives in moist, well-drained soils and is adaptable to a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade, although it will perform best with at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. The tree is relatively low-maintenance but benefits from regular watering, especially during dry spells, to maintain its health and vigor. Due to its unique form and relatively compact size, the Dragon's Claw Willow is often used in landscape designs as a specimen tree, in water gardens, or for adding visual interest to mixed borders. Its striking appearance and adaptability make it a versatile and attractive addition to various garden styles.
