Salix cinerea, commonly referred to as Grey Willow, is a robust deciduous shrub or small tree native to Europe and parts of Asia, renowned for its adaptability across various landscapes. This species typically exhibits oblong to lanceolate leaves that showcase a soft, grey-green hue, contributing to its common name. The underside of these leaves is adorned with fine hairs, enhancing their greyish appearance. Grey Willow features smooth, grey bark when young, which matures to a more fissured and textured surface over time. In spring, it produces fluffy catkins that serve as an essential early nectar source for bees and other pollinators, highlighting its ecological importance.
Mature specimens of Salix cinerea generally reach heights between 4 to 7 meters, making them suitable for small to medium-sized gardens, while the tree can spread approximately 4 to 6 meters, forming a rounded canopy. This species demonstrates remarkable adaptability to various soil types, thriving best in moist, well-drained soils but also tolerating poor, compacted, and even waterlogged conditions. Grey Willow prefers full sun to partial shade and is commonly found in wetland areas, riverbanks, and marshes, where it benefits from ample sunlight.
In addition to its ornamental qualities, Salix cinerea plays a significant role in supporting wildlife, providing both habitat and food for a variety of species. The catkins, in particular, are vital for early pollinators. Known for its fast growth rate, this tree is ideal for quickly establishing hedges or natural screens in gardens and landscapes. Overall, Salix cinerea is a resilient and valuable addition to both aesthetic and ecological landscapes.
