Salix integra 'Hakuro-nishiki', also known as the Japanese Dappled Willow, is a striking ornamental tree or large shrub prized for its unique variegated foliage. This deciduous plant boasts slender, arching branches adorned with lance-shaped leaves that emerge in stunning shades of pink, cream, and green. As the growing season progresses, the pink hues fade, leaving a beautiful mix of cream and green variegation that adds visual interest to any landscape.
Mature specimens of Salix integra 'Hakuro-nishiki' typically reach a height of 2-3 meters with a similar spread. Its compact size makes it an excellent choice for smaller gardens or as a focal point in mixed borders. This willow thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils. Although it is quite adaptable, it performs best in consistently moist conditions and can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils.
Notable features of the Japanese Dappled Willow include its rapid growth rate and relative ease of care. It is also known for its attractive, red-tinged stems that provide winter interest after the leaves have fallen. Pruning can be done in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and encourage vibrant new growth. Salix integra 'Hakuro-nishiki' is a versatile and eye-catching addition to gardens, providing year-round beauty and a touch of elegance with its ever-changing foliage.
