Sorbus aria 'Lutescens,' commonly known as the Whitebeam 'Lutescens,' is a deciduous tree celebrated for its striking foliage and elegant form. This tree is particularly noted for its young leaves, which emerge with a distinctive silvery-white hue, gradually maturing to a rich, dark green on the upper surface while retaining a silvery underside. In autumn, the foliage transitions to a warm, buttery yellow, adding seasonal interest to landscapes.
At maturity, Sorbus aria 'Lutescens' typically reaches a height of 8 to 12 meters and a spread of 6 to 8 meters, making it a suitable choice for medium to large gardens or as a specimen tree in parks. Its compact and rounded crown lends itself to a variety of landscape applications, from providing shade to creating a focal point. The tree also produces clusters of creamy-white flowers in spring, which are followed by small, red berries in autumn, attracting birds and other wildlife.
Sorbus aria 'Lutescens' thrives best in well-drained, loamy soils but is quite adaptable to a range of soil types, including chalky and sandy soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade and is relatively tolerant of urban pollution, making it an excellent choice for city environments. Additionally, this tree is noted for its resilience to drought once established, making it a low-maintenance option for gardeners seeking both beauty and practicality.
