Sorbus aucuparia, commonly known as Rowan or Mountain Ash, is a deciduous tree known for its graceful appearance and vibrant seasonal changes. Typically, this tree reaches a mature height of 10 to 15 meters, with a spread of around 4 to 8 meters, making it an excellent choice for medium to large gardens or as a standout feature in landscaping projects.
One of the key features of the Rowan is its pinnate leaves, which comprise 9 to 15 leaflets, each with a serrated edge. In spring, the tree produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers that attract a variety of pollinators. By late summer to autumn, these flowers transform into bright red or orange berries, a favourite among birds and a striking visual contrast against the yellow and red hues of its autumn foliage.
Rowan trees are adaptable to a variety of soil types, thriving best in well-drained, moderately fertile soils. They exhibit a preference for full sun to partial shade, making them versatile for different planting locations. Additionally, Sorbus aucuparia is known for its hardiness and ability to withstand cold temperatures, which makes it a suitable choice for cooler climates. Its berries are not only ornamental but have been used historically for making rowan jelly and various traditional remedies, adding another layer of interest to this charming tree.
