Sorbus commixta, commonly known as the Japanese Rowan or Japanese Mountain Ash, is a deciduous tree renowned for its ornamental appeal. It typically reaches a mature height of 8 to 12 meters and has a spread of approximately 4 to 6 meters, making it a moderately sized tree suitable for various landscape applications. The tree is particularly admired for its vibrant display of autumn colours, where the foliage transitions to striking shades of red, orange, and yellow.
One of the key features of Sorbus commixta is its pinnate leaves, which consist of 11 to 17 leaflets that provide a delicate, feathery appearance. In spring, the tree produces clusters of small, white flowers that are both attractive and fragrant. These flowers give way to bright red berries in the fall, which are not only visually appealing but also serve as a food source for birds and wildlife. The bark of the tree is smooth and gray, adding a subtle textural element to its overall aesthetic.
Sorbus commixta thrives best in well-drained, moderately fertile soil and can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade, making it quite versatile in terms of planting locations. This tree is relatively low-maintenance and can adapt to various environmental conditions, although it performs best in areas with cool, temperate climates. Its combination of aesthetic appeal, wildlife benefits, and adaptability makes Sorbus commixta a valuable addition to gardens and landscapes.
