Sorbus pseudovilmorinii, commonly known as Vilmorin's Rowan, is a charming small to medium-sized deciduous tree that stands out for its ornamental beauty. Belonging to the Rosaceae family, this tree is cherished for its delicate aesthetic and seasonal appeal.
One of its key features is the foliage, which consists of elegant, fern-like leaves that are pinnate with numerous small leaflets. In spring, the leaves showcase a reddish hue, transition to a lush green during summer, and finally transform into brilliant shades of orange, red, and purple in the fall. In late spring, Vilmorin's Rowan produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers that are mildly fragrant, attracting a variety of pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Following the flowering period, the tree bears small, berry-like fruits that start pink and mature to white, persisting into winter and providing sustenance for birds.
In terms of size, Sorbus pseudovilmorinii typically reaches a height of 4 to 6 meters and has a spread of about 3 to 5 meters, developing an open and airy canopy. It thrives in well-drained soils and is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, preferring slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. The tree flourishes best in full sun to partial shade, requiring sufficient sunlight for optimal flowering and fruiting but able to tolerate some shade, particularly in warmer climates.
Notable features of Vilmorin's Rowan include its hardiness, allowing it to withstand colder climates, which makes it suitable for diverse landscapes. Furthermore, its attractive fruits serve as a food source for birds, enhancing its ecological value in garden settings. With its changing foliage colour throughout the seasons and appealing fruits, Sorbus pseudovilmorinii provides year-round interest, making it an excellent choice for ornamental planting in gardens and parks.
