Sorbus vilmorinii, commonly known as Vilmorin's rowan, is a charming and ornamental small tree cherished for its delicate and graceful appearance. This deciduous tree typically reaches a mature height of 4 to 6 meters with a similar spread, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens and landscape projects where space is limited but beauty is desired.
One of the most notable features of Vilmorin's rowan is its finely divided, fern-like foliage that starts out with a delicate pinkish hue in spring, matures to a lush green in summer, and transitions to a vibrant red or purple in the fall, offering multi-seasonal interest. In late spring, the tree produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. These blossoms are followed by an abundance of small, spherical berries that transition from a striking pink to a deep red as they mature, providing a valuable food source for birds in the autumn and winter months.
Vilmorin's rowan is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, provided they are well-drained. It thrives best in full sun to partial shade, making it versatile for different garden conditions. Additionally, it is relatively low-maintenance and can tolerate urban pollution, making it a resilient choice for city gardens. Whether used as a focal point in a small garden, planted in groups for a striking effect, or incorporated into a mixed border, Sorbus vilmorinii is sure to add elegance and seasonal interest to any landscape.
