Sorbus aucuparia 'Fastigiata', commonly known as the Fastigiate Rowan or the Columnar Mountain Ash, is a striking deciduous tree that stands out for its distinctive upright growth habit. This particular variety is characterized by its narrow, columnar form, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens or settings where space is limited. The tree's foliage comprises pinnate leaves that emerge in a bright green hue, gradually turning to vibrant shades of yellow and orange in the autumn, adding a splash of seasonal colour to any landscape.
At maturity, the Fastigiate Rowan typically reaches a height of about 8 to 10 meters, with a spread of approximately 2 to 3 meters. This makes it an ideal choice for urban environments or as a vertical accent in a mixed border. The tree is also valued for its clusters of small, creamy-white flowers that appear in late spring, providing a delicate contrast against the lush foliage. These flowers are followed by an abundance of bright red berries in the autumn, which are not only visually appealing but also attract a variety of birds, contributing to local biodiversity.
In terms of growing conditions, Sorbus aucuparia 'Fastigiata' is adaptable to a wide range of soils, preferring well-drained, moderately fertile soil types. It thrives best in full sun to partial shade, making it a versatile option for different garden settings. The tree is generally hardy and can tolerate urban pollution, making it a resilient choice for city landscapes. With its elegant form, seasonal interest, and wildlife-friendly features, the Fastigiate Rowan is a noteworthy addition to any garden.
