Taxus baccata 'Fastigiata', commonly known as the Upright Yew, is a distinguished and versatile conifer widely appreciated for its dense, upright growth habit. This cultivar of the European Yew is notable for its columnar shape, making it an excellent choice for hedging, topiaries, and accent plantings in both formal and informal garden settings. The foliage is deep green and needle-like, providing a lush and evergreen presence year-round.
At maturity, the Upright Yew typically reaches a height of 6 to 10 meters, with a spread of about 1 to 2 meters. This narrow, vertical growth makes it particularly suitable for smaller gardens or as a structured element in larger landscapes. The plant's slow to moderate growth rate ensures that it remains manageable and maintains its attractive form with minimal pruning.
One of the key features of Taxus baccata 'Fastigiata' is its adaptability to a range of soil types, although it thrives best in well-drained, fertile soils. It tolerates both acidic and alkaline conditions, making it a versatile choice for diverse garden environments. The Upright Yew prefers partial to full shade but can also tolerate full sun, provided the soil does not dry out excessively. Additionally, it is relatively drought-tolerant once established and resistant to urban pollution, making it a resilient option for city gardens. Notably, all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, so care should be taken if planting near areas accessible to pets or children.
