Taxus baccata, commonly known as the English Yew, is a versatile and resilient evergreen tree, well-regarded for its dense, dark foliage and longevity. This tree can reach a mature height of approximately 10 to 20 meters, with a spread that can extend to around 6 to 12 meters. The English Yew is notable for its slow growth rate, which makes it an ideal choice for hedging and topiary.
The foliage of Taxus baccata consists of flat, needle-like leaves that are dark green on the upper side and lighter underneath. In the spring, female trees produce small, inconspicuous flowers that give way to red, berry-like fruits called arils. These arils are distinctive and attractive, though it is important to note that all parts of the tree, except for the flesh of the arils, are highly toxic if ingested.
English Yew trees thrive in a variety of soil types, including chalk, loam, sand, and clay, provided the soil is well-drained. They are quite adaptable to different pH levels, from acidic to alkaline. Taxus baccata prefers shaded to semi-shaded environments but can tolerate full sun as well, making it a versatile option for many garden settings. The tree's resilience to pruning and its ability to grow in challenging conditions, such as polluted urban areas, make it an excellent choice for both formal landscapes and natural woodland areas.
