Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd,' commonly known as Emerald Green Arborvitae, is a popular evergreen tree that is prized for its slender, conical shape and vibrant green foliage. This cultivar of the Eastern Arborvitae is particularly favoured in landscaping for its uniform, narrow form, making it an excellent choice for hedges, privacy screens, and ornamental plantings. The foliage retains its rich green colour year-round, providing a consistent visual appeal through all seasons.
One of the key features of Thuja 'Smaragd' is its manageable size. At maturity, it typically reaches a height of 4 to 6 meters and has a spread of around 1 to 1.5 meters. This makes it suitable for both large and small garden spaces. The tree grows at a moderate rate, usually adding about 30 to 60 centimetres (1 to 2 feet) per year under optimal conditions.
Thuja 'Smaragd' thrives best in well-drained, fertile soils and can adapt to a range of soil types, from sandy to clay. It prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, although its growth may be slightly slower in less sunny locations. This tree is relatively low-maintenance, with minimal pruning needed to maintain its shape. It is also known for its resistance to common pests and diseases, making it a durable addition to any landscape. For optimal growth, ensure it has consistent moisture, especially during the first few years after planting, as it establishes its root system.
