The Thuja plicata 'Gelderland', commonly known as the Western Red Cedar, is an evergreen conifer that is highly valued for its lush, dense foliage and imposing presence. This cultivar is particularly prized for its use in hedging and as a specimen tree due to its upright, pyramidal growth habit and rich green colour, which maintains its vibrancy throughout the year. Mature trees typically reach a height of 10 to 15 meters, with a spread of about 3 to 5 meters, making it a substantial addition to any landscape.
Key features of the 'Gelderland' include its aromatic, soft, scale-like leaves that form flat sprays, and its reddish-brown bark, which is fibrous and peels in long strips. This tree also produces small, inconspicuous cones that are 1 to 1.5 centimetres long, maturing from green to brown. One notable feature is its ability to tolerate pruning, which makes it an excellent choice for creating formal hedges or privacy screens.
When it comes to growing conditions, the Western Red Cedar is quite adaptable. It thrives in well-drained soils but can tolerate a variety of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. It prefers moist, fertile soils for optimal growth. In terms of sunlight, this tree is versatile, growing well in full sun to partial shade. However, it performs best with some protection from harsh afternoon sun, especially in hotter climates. With its combination of aesthetic appeal and practical benefits, Thuja plicata 'Gelderland' is a wonderful choice for gardeners looking to add a touch of evergreen splendor to their landscape.
