The Tilia cordata 'Winter Orange', commonly known as the Small-Leaved Lime or Littleleaf Linden, is a captivating deciduous tree renowned for its striking winter appeal. This cultivar stands out due to its vibrant orange-coloured stems and twigs, which provide a splash of colour in the otherwise drab winter landscape. At maturity, the 'Winter Orange' typically reaches a height of 10 to 15 meters, with a spread of approximately 6 to 10 meters, making it a moderately-sized tree suitable for various garden settings.
One of the key features of the Tilia cordata 'Winter Orange' is its heart-shaped, dark green leaves which turn a beautiful yellow in the autumn, adding seasonal interest. During summer, the tree produces clusters of small, fragrant, pale yellow flowers that are highly attractive to bees, making it a valuable addition to wildlife gardens. The tree also develops small, round, nut-like fruits that persist into the winter.
This variety of Tilia cordata prefers well-drained, fertile soils and can thrive in a range of soil types including clay, loam, and sandy soils. It is adaptable to both full sun and partial shade, although it performs best in full sun. The 'Winter Orange' is relatively low-maintenance and tolerant of urban pollution, making it an excellent choice for city parks and streetscapes. Its winter interest, coupled with its year-round beauty, makes the Tilia cordata 'Winter Orange' a standout selection for any landscape.
