Tilia henryana, commonly known as Henry's Lime, is a deciduous tree celebrated for its ornamental beauty and resilience. This species, native to China, can reach a mature height of approximately 15 to 20 meters, with a spread of about 8 to 12 meters. The tree is characterized by its broad, heart-shaped leaves that exhibit a unique serrated edge fringed with soft, white hairs. In autumn, the foliage transforms into a striking display of yellow, enhancing the tree's visual appeal.
One of the key features of Henry's Lime is its small, fragrant, creamy-yellow flowers that bloom in late summer. These blossoms attract a variety of pollinators, making the tree an excellent choice for biodiversity gardens. The flowers are followed by small, round, winged fruits that persist into the winter, providing additional interest and food for wildlife.
Henry's Lime thrives best in well-drained, fertile soils, but it is quite adaptable and can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade, making it versatile in various garden settings. The tree is also relatively drought-tolerant once established, though it benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry periods. With its combination of aesthetic appeal and ecological benefits, Tilia henryana is a valuable addition to both ornamental and ecological landscapes.
