The Tilia x euchlora, commonly known as the European White Lime or Crimean Linden, is a beautiful and robust deciduous tree that makes an excellent addition to parks, streets, and large gardens. This tree is a hybrid between Tilia cordata and Tilia dasystyla, combining the best qualities of both parent species. One of the standout features of the European White Lime is its symmetrical, conical to pyramidal crown, which eventually becomes more rounded with age. Its leaves are heart-shaped, dark green, and glossy on the upper side, with a paler underside that gives the tree a charming, shimmering appearance when rustled by the wind.
A mature European White Lime can reach heights of 15 to 20 meters, with a spread of 10 to 15 meters. These dimensions make it a substantial shade tree, providing ample canopy coverage. One of the notable features of this tree is its fragrant, yellowish-white flowers that bloom in early to mid-summer, attracting bees and other pollinators. The flowers are followed by small, round, and slightly ribbed fruits. The bark is smooth and greyish-brown when young, becoming more ridged and furrowed with age.
The Tilia x euchlora thrives in a variety of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, provided they are well-drained. It is remarkably adaptable but shows a preference for moist, fertile soils. This tree is also quite tolerant of urban pollution, making it a popular choice for city landscapes. In terms of light requirements, the European White Lime prefers full sun to partial shade. It is relatively low-maintenance and resistant to pests and diseases, although occasional aphid infestations may occur. Overall, the European White Lime is a versatile and attractive tree that offers both aesthetic and ecological benefits.
