The Tilia x europaea 'Pallida', commonly known as the Pallida Lime or Pallida Linden, is a majestic deciduous tree that is highly esteemed for its attractive appearance and urban tolerance. This hybrid tree, a cross between Tilia cordata and Tilia platyphyllos, boasts a symmetrical, pyramidal crown that matures into a broad, rounded shape. It typically reaches a mature height of 20 to 25 meters and a spread of approximately 15 to 18 meters, making it a prominent feature in landscapes and large gardens.
One of the key features of the Pallida Lime is its heart-shaped leaves, which are a glossy green and turn a striking yellow in autumn, providing seasonal interest. The leaves are typically around 10cm long and have finely serrated edges. During late spring to early summer, the tree produces clusters of small, fragrant, pale yellow flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. These flowers give way to small, round, winged fruits that persist into the winter months, adding to the tree's ornamental appeal.
Tilia x europaea 'Pallida' is adaptable to a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, provided they are well-drained. It thrives in full sun to partial shade conditions, making it versatile for various planting locations. This tree is also noted for its tolerance to urban pollution, making it an excellent choice for city streets and parks. Additionally, its deep-rooted system helps in stabilizing soil, thus preventing erosion. Overall, the Pallida Lime is a robust and attractive tree that offers both ecological benefits and aesthetic value to any landscape.
