The ULMUS 'Sapporo Autumn Gold', commonly known as the Sapporo Autumn Gold Elm, is a hybrid elm tree admired for its resilience and aesthetic appeal. This deciduous tree is a cross between the Japanese Elm (Ulmus japonica) and the Siberian Elm (Ulmus pumila), resulting in a species that boasts impressive disease resistance, particularly against Dutch Elm Disease.
Key features of the Sapporo Autumn Gold Elm include its distinctive, golden-yellow foliage in the fall, which provides a striking contrast to the green leaves it displays throughout the growing season. The leaves are ovate and serrated, contributing to the tree's lush and full appearance. Mature trees typically reach a height of approximately 12-15 meters and have a spread of about 10-12 meters, making them a suitable choice for urban landscapes, parks, and large gardens.
This elm thrives in a variety of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, as long as they are well-drained. It prefers full sun to partial shade, ensuring optimal growth and vibrant autumn coloration. Additionally, the Sapporo Autumn Gold Elm is tolerant of urban pollution and can withstand harsh conditions, including drought and compacted soils, making it an excellent choice for city environments. Its robust nature and striking seasonal display make it a standout addition to any landscape planning.
