Zelkova serrata 'Green Vase,' commonly known as the Green Vase Zelkova, is a deciduous tree prized for its elegant, vase-shaped form and attractive foliage. This cultivar is a member of the elm family and is native to Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. It is particularly favoured for its strong resistance to Dutch elm disease, making it a robust and reliable choice for urban and suburban landscapes.
One of the key features of the Green Vase Zelkova is its graceful, upright branching habit that forms a vase-like structure, which provides a striking silhouette even in winter when the tree is bare. The leaves are serrated, ovate, and emerge with a reddish tint in spring before maturing to a rich green in summer and turning to shades of yellow, orange, and bronze in the fall. This tree typically reaches a mature height of 12-18 meters and a spread of 10-15 meters making it a substantial yet manageable addition to a variety of settings.
The Green Vase Zelkova prefers well-drained soil and can thrive in a range of soil types, from sandy loam to clay. It is adaptable to different pH levels, tolerating both acidic and slightly alkaline soils. This tree flourishes best in full sun, requiring at least six hours of direct sunlight daily, but it can tolerate partial shade as well. Its notable features include a high tolerance for urban conditions such as pollution and compacted soil, along with a moderate growth rate. The bark is smooth and gray, exfoliating with age to reveal an attractive orange-brown inner layer, adding visual interest year-round. This tree is an excellent choice for streetscapes, parks, and large gardens where its architectural form and seasonal beauty can be fully appreciated.
