Zelkova serrata, commonly known as Japanese Zelkova, is a deciduous tree that belongs to the Ulmaceae family. It is highly valued for its attractive appearance and durability, making it a popular choice for urban landscapes and parks. The tree is distinguished by its vase-shaped form, with a rounded crown and gracefully arching branches. Its bark starts out smooth and grey but matures to a distinctive exfoliating pattern that reveals patches of orange and brown, adding to its ornamental appeal.
At maturity, Zelkova serrata typically reaches a height of 15 to 24 meters with a spread of 10 to 18 meters. The leaves are elliptical, serrated, and turn vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red in autumn, providing a striking seasonal display. The tree produces small, inconspicuous green flowers in the spring, followed by tiny, wingless fruits.
Zelkova serrata thrives in well-drained, loamy soils but is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including sandy and clay soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade, requiring at least four hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth. Notably resistant to Dutch elm disease, which has devastated many elm species, Zelkova serrata is also tolerant of urban pollution and compacted soils, making it an excellent choice for street planting and urban environments. Its resilience, coupled with its aesthetic qualities, makes the Japanese Zelkova a valuable addition to a diverse range of landscapes.
